Curling in Brazil [English]

EMERGENCE OF BRAZILIAN CURLING

Brazilian Curling joined the World Curling Federation in 1998 by the Brazilian Ice Sports Confederation (CBDG), representative of the sport in the country. However, the sport would only make the debut in official competitions in the United States-Brazil Curling Challenge 2009 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

In the US-Brazil Challenge in 2009, the Brazilian team lost all three games and did not qualify for the World Championship that year. In 2010 the country again defied the United States, once again being defeated in three matches.

THE PHENOMENON OF CURLING IN BRAZIL

During the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010, an unusual and unpredictable phenomenon swept the country. This would be the first edition of the Winter Games broadcasted on national television by a open signal major channel. And Curling was the hit of the moment. Curiosity of the population in dealing with an entirely different sport and atypical in comparison wth the traditional sports in the country, turned into an overwhelming interest, either in terms of audience and in comments on social networks, creating a legion of fans and supporters. Came to be considered "national passion"for many, sometimes in exaggerated form. One of the most famous and circulated picture through the network about the sport in Brazil, without doubt, is the "teapot guy" of the picture below:

As a result of the awakening of this new national pastime, SporTV decided to acquire the rights to broadcast the World Championship that would take place one month after the Olympics. However, the relative low importance given to the event by SporTV resulted in only 3 (three) days of transmission of the championship, which resulted in fans furious and forced the Broadcasters to explain the low coverage of the event. Still, it is estimated that more than 1 (one) million people have watched the event.

CURLING  IN BRAZIL AFTER VANCOUVER 2010

Besides the transmission of the world championship, another big event kept alive the flame of the sport. The installation of a temporary sheet/lane in Shopping Eldorado in August by Neutrogena attracted an audience that was not restricted to Sao Paulo, with visitors coming from places like Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. And then, for the first time, they had direct contact with the sport on ice in the national territory, with the presence of Canadian instructors and beauty Linn Githmark of Norwegian women's team.
